United Nations Security Council

unsc2.1

COMMITTEE INTRODUCTION

Currently led by Japanese Representative and diplomat Koro Bessho and headquartered in New York, the Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. Tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council has the ability to establish peacekeeping operations, impose sanctions, and authorize the use of force through resolutions. UNSC draws on UN peacekeepers, voluntary military resources from member states, and the main UN budget for resources. The Security Council consists of five permanent members and ten revolving countries who are elected for two year terms on a regional basis. After being created in the advent of World War II to replace an ineffective League of Nations, the five permanent members have remained the victors of WWII: the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France, the Russian Federation, and the People’s Republic of China.

The Security Council is an advanced committee that involves extensive and fast-paced debate considering its small size. Any delegates who are looking for a more challenging committee requiring extensive participation from all present will find UNSC to be a rewarding experience.

Position papers are mandatory for UNSC and are due on March 14, 2018 at 11:59 PM. Any inquiries about this committee may be directed to the dais at [email protected].

shreya

Shreya Kedia

Director

Shreya is a junior at Redmond High School and is super excited to be Assistant Director of the United Nations Security Council. She joined Model UN in her sophomore year and quickly grew to love the on-the-spot speeches, fast paced decision making, and respectful but assertive diplomacy required during committee session. Shreya has attended four conferences thus far while staffing at REDMUN 2017, returning as the USG of Committees for REDMUN 2018. Over the course of the last year, Model UN has helped her grow immensely as a public speaker and made her more aware of the world’s international affairs. Outside of MUN, Shreya enjoys being a part of Relay for Life and loves dancing, singing, and watching Netflix. She also has a possibly unhealthy obsession with cute French desserts and Pusheen. Shreya is excited to work with the delegates and make BELLEVUEMUN a memorable experience for all!

alicen

Alicen Han

Chair

As a sophomore at Newport High School, Alicen recently joined Model United Nations and discovered her passion for leadership, debate, and politics. Other than MUN, Alicen also participates in JSA, plays tennis for the Junior Varsity team as a singles player (and sometimes swings up to varsity), and plays the clarinet in Newport's Wind Ensemble and Philharmonic Orchestra. She likes to relieve stress through K-POP and hiphop/modern dancing.

miranda

Miranda Zhang

Assistant Director

Miranda Zhang is a sophomore at Interlake High School. In her spare time, she loves to paint, read, watch YouTube, play with her little sister, hang out with friends, and enjoy food. This year is her first year in MUN and staffing in BELMUN. She first found interest in BELMUN last year when she was introduced to it during her AP world class. She is excited to work with new delegates and peak their interest about MUN, just as she was, and looks forward to staffing as assistant director for the UNSC!
